Curved and Geometric Staircases and Handrails

One of the most challenging types of staircase to build is that which is curving and free standing.  Constructing the hand rails, which curve through three dimension, involves particularly complex geometry.  Such handrails are known as wreathed.  During the design we use a hand drawn geometrical method which was developed through the late 1800's; and we use traditional techniques to shape the handrails.

This staircase is the centre piece of a contempory house that we designed and constructed.  It is built into the walls with a sweeping curved plaster wall in place of a string and balustrading.

We gave the handrail an octagonal section to add elegance to the spiral; the eight surfaces twisting through three dimensions together.

This fairly complex traditional oak staircase is free standing and curves through 180 degrees, passing through a gap in the wall between rooms.

It had to be built to fit tightly into this curved stairwell.

We constructed this colonial style curved staircase to the customers design.  It fits into the double height, curved atrium of a new house.

It has a long uninterrupted hand rail terminating in a traditional scroll.  The curved oak treads mirror the scroll above.

We use traditional methods of construction in most areas of wreathed handrailing.

We built this staircase over 20 years ago in a house on the North Norfolk coast, and these recent pictures are testament to the test of time.
